We knew that the Colosseum and the Forum are the big ticket
items in Rome. This needs to be checked
off the list well. So, we pre-arranged a
private tour that is geared for kids and met our guide at a painful 8:45
am! The tour itself was fine and the girls
shined it on but igniting passion for ancient history in the iPad generation is
tricky. Even Jacqui doesn’t have much
appreciation for something still existing that was built 2000 years ago. Charlotte and Natalie were just along for the
ride. The tour guide engaged them as
best she could and we checked that one off the list.
After the tour and lunch in the Jewish Ghetto, Jack, Natalie
and Jacqui went home for naps and Charlotte and I set off on foot to find
treasures. Charlotte is a magpie and she
wants nothing more than a little shiny object to squirrel away in her pocket.
We walked out for dinner at around 5:00. On our way we stopped at a local
playground. It was so cute watching the Italian
kids try to talk to Jacqui and Charlotte and then to see their reactions. We walked on to the Testaccio neighborhood - the
Roman equivalent to NY’s Meatpacking District -- for dinner and gelato. It is
funky and cool and was the highlight of our day! There
were no tourists here! Just us and the
locals.
The girls are really getting the hang of the Nasonis (public water fountains)! It takes some finesse to not soak your shoes (or your face).
