Jack decided to kick off his Father's Day with a long run around Villa Doria Pamphili. We set off after lunch (!) with the girls for the Pantheon - knowing that it would be open this time! The girls were interested in earning gelato points so they humored me as I recited some of the history and then leaned their heads back to watch the clouds wander by through the oculus. No one seemed surprised that there was a big hole in the roof!
We hit Giolotti for the promised gelato (good, but not great) then wandered through the streets toward the La Bocca della Verità (the Mouth of Truth). It was believed that if one told a lie with one's hand in the mouth of the sculpture, it would be bitten off. Along the way, we stopped in on a wooden toy workshop and store - tourist trap for sure but fun for the kids. The line at the Mouth of Truth was truly epic so we assigned this to another day and hopped a cab home. The liars among us just got a reprieve! Jack stayed downtown while the girls and I jetted home to meet Dora (our sitter) by 5:00. Date night started out with an aperitivo in the bar on top of the xxx. It provided lots to look at - both a view of the city skyline and our fellow revelers! We walked to dinner in the Piazza Navona and enjoyed a simple meal on one of the most lively squares in Rome!
