Although our neighborhood is well served by public transportation, we realized today that it's kind of a pain to get anywhere that a tourist would want to be from here! We took both a train and a subway to get to Villa Borghese and were stressed the whole trip because we were going to be late for our 11 AM entry ticket. As it turns out, showing up late is actually benefit! No line. No wait. Everyone in your start group is in a big clump 30 minutes ahead of you so you kind of have the place to yourself! Hurray for us! The girls did not love the art but we looked for ways to make it fun and when the girls patience had run out, we looked for places for him to sit while we finished up. After the museum, we hit one of the few playgrounds in Rome. It was so old-school I had to laugh. A see-saw with half a tire under each seat as a spring. Really?? The kids didn't seem to notice! Then we rented a big 4-wheeler bike and rode around the park to see the gardens, old bits of ruins and random fountains. It was fun. We stopped and rode the carousel then headed home.
Jack and I headed out for date night stopping in Trastevere to visit 3 open art Galleries - one of which featured local street artists work. I wanted to ask why all the graffiti in Rome but didn't dare! Then we hit an artisanal cocktail place for our aperitivo before our 8:00 pm entry into the Vatican. We walked almost 10 miles today - 2 of them within the Vatican. By the time we finished the galleries (an impressive collection for sure) and got to the Sistine Chapel, my feet were done! Luckily, there are benches for weary art lovers - a rarity in Rome!
We grabbed dinner at La Campana - a restaurant known for traditional, roman food, service and decor. Jack ordered the tripe as its a traditional Roman dish. Eating that takes guts!!
